Websites for Cooks

Great websites related to cooking and baking:

BakeSpace.com
This is the “MySpace” for bakers (and cookers). An interactive blog/recipe collection, this site encourages home chefs to post original creations or retooled recipes. My user name is “jennscookbook” and I often post my recipes here as well. A great networking opportunity for anyone who likes to connect with other food enthusiasts.

www.idealbite.com

Ideal Bite: A Sassier Shade of Green. Sign up for daily tips to help save the planet. Ideal Bite “offers bite-sized ideas for light green living,” including tips on organic foods, safer household products, and innovative ways to reduce waste.

MyRecipes.com

MyRecipes.com
A great resource! A recipe collection pulled from magazines such as Cooking Light, Real Simple, Southern Living, and more. This has an excellent enhanced search option and features interesting articles on “how -to” for the kitchen. Look for feature articles like “7 Ways With…” which is an ongoing series showcasing various ingredients and “A Month of…” that counts down recipes in a particular category for an entire month.

Everyday Food
Part of Martha Stewart’s empire, this is the web-version of my favorite magazine subscription. Features recipes not published in the magazine, plus instructional videos and articles on healthy eating, entertaining, and much more.

Real Simple
Another website based on a popular magazine, full of house and home tips and tricks. Find decorating, entertaining, cleaning, and cooking articles as well as great recipes.

Food Network
The website for the popular television channel, with many of the recipes from your favorite shows. Don’t be fooled into purchasing their cookbooks, all of the recipes you want are right here.

Mr. Breakfast
A recipe collection for all of your breakfast needs, from healthy smoothies to the all-American platter.

PickYourOwn.Org - Michigan
Find farms in Michigan (or any other state) as well as tips on picking, canning, freezing, and eating fresh produce. This site also features pumpkin patches and corn mazes in the Fall and detailed on the annual Cherry Festival in Traverse City.

Cooks.com
This website is full of user supplied recipes. You can type in a particular type of recipe, such as “spinach artichoke dip,” or search by categories like meat, vegetables, and pasta.

AllRecipes.com
Another recipe database full of user provided ideas. A great go-to guide if you are looking for a particular recipe, and especially good if you want to locate an old family recipe, like your Grandma’s famous butterscotch cookies.

cdkitchen
A website with recipes submitted by users and by professionals in the cooking industry. A great variety of recipes, tips, articles, and mailing lists. Lots of ads and pop-ups though (use your blockers).

Cook’s Thesaurus
This is a cooking “Thesaurus” with great tips for the kitchen. Entries include pictures, descriptions, synonyms, pronunciations, and suggested substitutions.

Spice & Herb Encyclopedia
An encyclopedia of most herbs and spices used in cooking with information on their origins, histories, and cultures. Includes notes on flavors and preparation tips, a great reference for a chef experimenting with different cuisines.

RecipeZaar
This recipe collection website also offers a free email newsletter. Similar to other user-recipe sites, but may offer recipes not available elsewhere.

BellyBytes.com
This is a good nutrition and health website. I particularly like the tea recipes available and have posted several that I have tried. Also has information on weight loss, but beware of advertisements and pop-ups.

Stash Tea: Tea Recipes
Recipes from the Stash Tea company, makers of some very tasty tea. Offers tips on making both hot and ice teas, as well as ways to cook with tea in desserts, jams, sauces, and more! The main website also offers a great selection of flavored teas, history and culture of tea, and information on the different types of tea, including health and beauty reports.

Foodreference.com
Just updated in February 2008, find food events in history and an extensive food calendar. Search by day, week, or month. May is National Asparagus Month, who knew?
